Calgary Outdoor Club - About Us

The Calgary Outdoor Club (COC) is a volunteer-run organization for adults, featuring outdoor activities in and around the Calgary area. The COC's objective is to:

  1. Organize and conduct recreational group events to permit it's members to participate in outdoor sporting and recreational activities
  2. Promote and encourage it's members to:
         a. Organize and participate in outdoor sporting and recreational activities,
         b. Live a healthy lifestyle,
         c. Increase their awareness of safety issues while organizing and participating in events,
         d. Increase their knowledge and skills of various outdoor and sporting activities, and
         e. Be aware of good stewardship practices relating to nature, the environment, and the outdoors
  3. To provide and maintain an online website for its members to facilite the organization of events and the registration of participants
The BYLAWS of the club can be found here

The COC is a recreational society, not a professional organization and does not subscribe to any sets of standards laid out by a national or international association. As such, we do not require volunteers to pass, provide, or write any kind of certification recognized by any national or international authority. All of our Event Coordinators and members of the various committees are all Volunteers who donate their time and efforts to organizing fun filled events for members.

The COC was originally founded in April 2003. Statistics regarding the club can be found on our Statistics page.

Membership is open to any interested adult, regardless of his or her experience level. All we ask for in return is a voluntary donation for each event they attend. For those interested in a higher level of involvement with the club, Premier and Volunteer memberships are also available. Click here for more information.

The COC solicits support in the form of both time and monetary donations to help keep the club running. There is no paid staff. Volunteer positions include various aspects of running the club as well as coordinating events (meet our Volunteer Team/). Funds collected are recycled back into the club to pay for costs such as maintaining the web site or supporting an event.

A Virtual Clubhouse

The COC relies heavily on its interactive events and networking web site to allow people to sign up for events, communicate with one another, register and pay for events, submit event feedback, and make suggestions for club improvements.

The web site is the backbone - the "virtual clubhouse" - of the COC. Members can sign up for upcoming events online in a matter of minutes, browse upcoming events, network with other members and volunteers. The lack of overhead required by a physical club house permits the club to continue to offer free memberships.
