Week 8
Another capacity crowd filled St Stephen’s Junior High School Gymnasium on Sunday to compete in the final dodge ball tournament of 2009! 43 eager participants arrived hoping for a chance to leave their mark on the infamous Dodge Ball Wall of Fame before the Christmas break. As usual, the participants, a nice mix of veterans and rookies, were randomly divided into 4 teams and given the task of coming up with a name for themselves. After a few minutes of team bonding, the names were submitted and the quest for GOLD began as the 20 game round robin got underway.
Each team played 10 times before being seeded for the playoff rounds. The games were filled with plenty of excitement as each team battled hard to earn 1st place in the round robin. Jingle Balls lead the pack with an impressive 8-2-0 record followed closely by The Globe Huckers who came in at 6-3-1. The Pink Panties lead by all-star veteran Chris Scutchings, managed a mediocre 3-6-1 record while Rum Balls limped into the playoffs, earning just a pair of wins in ten tries.
In the semi-finals, the action really heated up as both series required the full 3 games to declare a winner. The 4th place Rum Balls experienced a Christmas miracle when they upset the heavily favoured #1 ranked Jingle Balls in the opening round. Not to be outdone, the underdog Pink Panties pulled off an upset of their own, downing a more experienced Globe Huckers team to set up an all underdog final.
In the medal round, the tournament favourite Jingle Balls stumbled in game one but roared back to defeat the Globe Huckers in games 2 and 3 to salvage a bronze medal. “It wasn’t pretty, we should be standing here with gold around our neck!” said an emotional Chirag Patel. “It was tough to get up for this series after blowing our shot at gold.” Finally, in gold medal action, it was the battle of the underdogs as the Pink Panties and Rum Balls squared off in a 3 game showdown. Unfortunately for Rum Balls however, there would be no Cinderella story on this night. Chris and his Pink Panties dominated the series, winning 2 straight games to earn the title. Congratulations Pink Panties on your gold medal performance tonight!!
