300!
Tonight marked another milestone in my role as a COC volunteer coordinator with the celebration of my 300th coordinated event. We kicked off the evening with the distribution of little gift boxes to each participant containing homemade chocolate surrounded by colourful little gumballs representing mini dodge balls. They looked absolutely fantastic and were a real hit with the crowd. A very BIG thanks to Fluffy & Marvin for all the time and effort they put in to creating these cute little mementos.
After everyone had checked in and gathered together in the middle of the gymnasium for the usual pre-game instruction, I announced my desire to do something special in recognition of reaching 300 events. At this time I presented each and every participant with their own souvenir t-shirt to mark the occasion. Each of the four teams received their own team coloured shirt and for the first time in COC dodge ball history, we actually looked very professional out on the court. It was really neat! A very special thank you to Lois for all her help in getting 50+ shirts completed over the weekend.
After everyone got their shirts sorted out we finally got down to business and began the tournament. The T Baggers (white shirts) finished 1st with an impressive 8-2 record while Brown Paper Balls (green shirts) were searching for brown paper bags to hide their heads under after finishing the round robin in last place with just 1 victory. Meanwhile the other two teams were very evenly matched as Freshly Waxed Balls (red shirts) and Team Good Looking (blue shirts) finished with identical 5-4-1 records. Second place honours went to Freshly Waxed Balls due to their winning record against Team Good Looking.
In the semi-finals, the number one ranked T Baggers easily won their series against the Brown Paper Balls to earn the right to compete for gold while Freshly Waxed Balls sent Team Good Looking to the bronze medal series with an exciting 2-1 series victory.
In the medal round, both series required the full 3 games to declare a victor. In the bronze medal series after a scare in game 1, Team Good Looking roared back to win the next 2 and claim the bronze medal over the lowly Brown Paper Bags. In the gold medal series an unexpected strong performance by the Freshly Waxed Balls lead to a shocking upset of the highly favoured T Baggers. Overall it was a very exciting playoff round and a well earned victory. Congratulations Freshly Waxed Balls on your gold medal performance tonight!!
After the game many of us headed over to Boston Pizza where we shared our usual laughs over a few drinks and snacks. Those who made it out were also treated to my freshly baked “Event 300” chocolate cupcakes.
