Week 15
Another capacity crowd filled St Stephen’s Junior High School Gymnasium on Tuesday to compete in round 15 of the 2009-2010 dodge ball season! 39 eager participants arrived with dreams of hoisting the most coveted prize in all of COC sports, the Dodge Ball Cup and having their name forever engraved on the infamous, Dodge Ball Wall of Fame! As usual, the participants, a nice mix of veterans and rookies, were randomly divided into 4 teams and given the task of coming up with a name for themselves. After a few minutes of team bonding, the names were submitted and the quest for GOLD began with game 1 of the 20 game round robin.
Each team played 10 times before being seeded for the playoff rounds. The games were filled with lots of excitement and plenty of incredible comebacks as teams battled hard to earn 1st place in the round robin. The appropriately named Team Stacked finished first with a 6-3-1 record followed closely by Team Sparta at 6-4. The Flying Monkey’s (4-6) secured 3rd spot with a win over BOV (3-6-1) in the final game of the round robin.
In the semi-finals, fourth place BOV shocked an over confident Team Stacked winning 2 of 3 games to advance to the gold medal round. Meanwhile, in other action, team Sparta made short work of the Flying Monkeys to earn a date with the underdog BOV squad.
In the medal round, Team Stacked took out their semi-final loss frustrations on the poor Flying Monkeys to lock up the bronze medal. “I’m very disappointed with my performance over the past few weeks” said a disgusted Gerardo Marquez who pointed out his once comfortable lead atop the medal standings has now been reduced to just a single point. “I won’t be able to look myself in the mirror if that old timer Glavina passes me!”
In the Gold medal series BOV came out flying, destroying Team Sparta in the opening game to find themselves just one victory away from a Cinderella story finish. After the loss however, Team Sparta held an emergency meeting to regroup and it paid off as they roared back to win the next 2 games and the series. Congratulations to Team Sparta on bringing home the GOLD tonight!
