Week 16
Another capacity crowd filled St Stephen’s Junior High School Gymnasium on Tuesday to compete in round 16 of the 2009-2010 dodge ball season! 43 eager participants arrived with dreams of hoisting the most coveted prize in all of COC sports, the Dodge Ball Cup and having their name forever engraved on the infamous, Dodge Ball Wall of Fame! As usual, participants were randomly divided into 4 teams and given the task of coming up with a name for themselves. After a few minutes of team bonding, the names were submitted and the quest for GOLD began with game 1 of the 20 game round robin.
Each team played 10 times before being seeded for the playoff rounds. It was the closest and most exciting round robin yet as just one win separated first from last! As usual, there was plenty of excitement to go around as teams jockeyed for position throughout the tournament. After a very slow start, Exploding Balls of Delight (5-3-2) roared back with 4 wins in the second half collecting 12 points and edging out the Mob who finished with 11 points at 5-4-1. The Gladiatorz weren’t far behind finishing at 4-5-1 (9 points) followed closely by Dingle Bawlz at 4-6 good for 8 points. A very close finish to say the least!!
In the semi-finals, fourth place Dingle Bawlz gave the #1 ranked Exploding Balls of Delight a good scare after winning game 1 of the series but were unable to complete the upset, losing the reaming 2 games and settling for a spot in the bronze medal final. Meanwhile, in other action, The Gladiatorz who appeared to be getting stronger as the tournament went on, wasted little time disposing of an unprepared Mob squad to advance to the gold medal round.
In the medal round, the Mob, who never quite recovered from their heartbreaking semi-final series loss, came up empty dropping back to back games to Dingle Bawlz to walk way with the dreaded participation pin despite a very well played tournament. “I just can’t seem to catch a break this season” said a disheartened Fluffy after receiving her pin. “I have to admit I have been feeling the pressure since signing that multi-million dollar contract last year. I know that kind of money puts a certain expectation on me and so far I haven’t lived up to the hype this season. It’s been really tough on me, my family and especially my fans.”
In the Gold medal series Exploding Balls of Delight struck first with a victory in game 1 and looked to be in control but the Gladiatorz had other plans and roared back to even up the series in game 2. The 3rd and deciding game actually required some dramatic sudden death overtime play and when it was all said and done a line violation cost the Gladiatorz a gold medal. “I’ve never been so humiliated in my life!” said a visibly shaken Parry Loeffler who accepted full responsibility for the loss. “I have been waiting all season to have a gold medal placed around my neck and it hurts like hell to think this may be as close as I ever get to fulfilling my childhood dream.” The call was a gutsy one by veteran line judge Blake Hyde, especially in overtime but after extensive video review it proved to be the right one and Exploding Balls of Delight was officially crowned tournament champs. Congratulations to all four teams on great effort tonight!
