It was great riding in Jasper. We woke up to snow on Sat morning and 6 of our 22 people decided to pull up stakes and head for home. I could mention names but I think we already gave them a hard enough time for wimping out. Lucky for them they hung around Jasper long enough to see the sun come out so they changed their minds and stayed to ride.
Day 1 We all rode the Valley of the Five Lakes but split into about 3 groups. Some went onto Wabasso Lake as well. A fun rolling trail with some great views of the lakes as you ride by. There were a few technical sections but otherwise it was pretty cruisy. 42 kms return trip
We had a fabulous pot luck dinner in spite of the cool weather. The food was pretty amazing and the desserts outstanding.
Day 2 Overlander We. all travelled as one group and rode together from the camp ground to Maligne Canyon. We encountered a few bears along the way and a Griz with 2 young ones. We had a small army and with our hooting and hollering mom just sat and watched us go by. From the canyon we all rode at our own pace along the Overlander Trail. The trail was a real mix of terrain and scenery. We started off with some great rollers and then into a section of roots along the river. Then we were in the forest and the trail rocked and rolled and wound through the trees. Next we broke out into an open meadow and come across the remains of the John Moberly homestead. Then we were rode along the ridges overlooking the Snaring River. Lastly we climbed up into a boulder field with a wicked short descent down to the cars. I think this trail was a hit with everyone. 32 kms
Day 3 Saturday Night Lake Our numbers had dwindled down to 11 for the last day. We just did an in and out as the back side of the loop was still snow bound. I think most of us were thankful that we couldn't ride the full loop. A bit of rain followed by grapple and then the sun broke out. It was a fair amount of climbing but mostly on a smooth trail with a few technical rocky sections. A quick lunch at the lake and then it was a very fun and fast descent back to town. Kayla did a swan dive off the trail about 1 km from the cars which required about 6 stitches and a few bruises. She was a trouper right to the end. We had a tail gate party in the parking lot and feasted on watermelon before heading for home. 20 kms
I think a return trip is in order. Stay tuned for a movie coming your way soon.
