Week 18
Another capacity crowd filled St Stephen’s Junior High School Gymnasium on Tuesday to compete in round 18 of the 2009-2010 dodge ball season! A season high of 47 eager participants arrived with dreams of hoisting the most coveted prize in all of COC sports, the Dodge Ball Cup and having their name forever engraved on the infamous, Dodge Ball Wall of Fame! As usual, participants were randomly divided into 4 teams and given the task of coming up with a name for themselves. After a few minutes of team bonding, the names were submitted and the quest for GOLD began with game 1 of the 20 game round robin.
Each team played 10 times before being seeded for the playoff rounds. For 3 of the 4 teams, the battle for first was extremely tight with just one win separating 1st from 3rd! As usual, there was plenty of excitement as teams jockeyed for position throughout the tournament. When the dust settled, Spicy Meatballs landed on top with a respectable 6-2-2 record followed closely by Head Shots at 6-4-0 and Duck Duck Ouch at 5-3-2. Finally, at the bottom of the pile was Frisky Balls on the Bench who managed just a single victory to finish at 1-9-0.
In the semi-finals, fourth place Frisky Balls on the Bench gave the heavily favoured Spicy Meatballs a scare in game 2 but were unable to complete the upset losing the series 2-1 settling for a spot in the bronze medal final. Meanwhile, in other action, Head Shots also required 3 full games to get past a pesky Duck Duck Ouch squad setting up a gold medal match featuring the top 2 round robin teams!
In the medal round, both series ended in a hurry as Frisky Balls on the Bench reverted to their losing ways dropping 2 straight to Duck Duck Ouch while the Head Shots swept the #1 ranked Spicy Meatballs to claim the Dodge Ball Cup! Congratulations to all four teams on a great effort tonight!
