Sat, May 15 2010 - Banff - Urban bike 28 km and hike 6 km (View Original Event Details)

This bike n’ hike combination worked out very well. We basically followed the itinerary as per the event description.
The Vermillion Lakes Road is a well paved road with a short gravel extension at the end, but we met few cars. There were lots of scenic viewpoints. The Fenland trail is wide, packed dirt and follows Forty Mile Creek for part, it is very pretty in the trees.
We continued down the trail on the Bow to the bridge that crosses the Bow then took the trail that is alongside the road to the Cave and Basin area. We took the slightly longer Marsh Loop trail which is deep gravel and has some great views along the Bow. This joins the Sundance trail which terminates at the trailhead for the Sundance Canyon hike. We locked our bikes here.
The bridge that crosses Sundance Creek was completely covered in an ice flow, but we were ready with our Icers and carried on. The rest of the trail was mainly dry.
It was a fun ride and hike and it is surprising how you can get away from it all while you are still basically in the Banff townsite.
