Despite the cold, a great group of COC’ers made their way to the Subway Soccer Centre this afternoon for a rare matinee game. It was a fun yet grueling workout for those who lasted the full 2 hours. Once again, for the 2nd consecutive event we welcomed 5 newcomers who all played very well for their respective teams. As usual there were plenty of great saves and scoring opportunities at both ends of the field throughout the match. After 1 period of play Gold found themselves holding on to a slim one goal lead. In the 2nd teams continued their see saw battle scoring 3 a piece but solving nothing as once again Gold lead by 1 at the intermission (6-5). Things changed in the 3rd however when Blue magically caught fire as I took over the goalkeeping duties for team Gold. I let in several weak goals that put the game out of reach for my teammates yet they were very gracious in their 12-9 defeat. I couldn’t help but feel bad for Gold as they really did deserve a better fate. Sorry guys.
Tonight’s "Player of the Game" award was presented immediately following the game to Claudine Cormier, who just joined the COC in early 2010. Tonight was her first ever COC soccer event and 2nd shared event with me. Although I have only recently met Claudine, I have found her to be a very pleasant and adventurous individual who is willing to give just about anything a try. It can be quite intimidating joining a group of people you don’t know to play a sport you haven’t competed in since you were a child but Claudine did just that this afternoon with great success! She played hard, made several nice plays and was a force to be reckoned with on the field. In addition to her solid play, she demonstrated great sportsmanship throughout the event making her an easy choice for player of the game honours! It was a pleasure having you join us today Claudine and congratulations on your well deserved award!
After the game, many of us headed upstairs to the Soccer Centre Pub where we enjoyed some great food and fellowship before heading home. Thanks again to everyone who came out and made this such a great evening! I look forward to seeing you all again next time.
