Write Up:
Well, that was interesting! Mountain biking at night on snow packed trails, a new life experience chalked up. The weather was perfect for this event thanks to a well timed Chinook. We ventured clockwise around the Glenmore Reservoir starting at the Big H at Heritage Park. The first part was on the pathway where we encountered many reflector clad joggers with side comments of ‘boy to those bikers have bright lights’. From the pathway we migrated down to a trail on the reservoir shoreline. This trail had been packed down by hikers and was about foot wide. The snow on either side of this path was a very soft and would stop you very quickly if penetrated. This path was very bumpy and awfully narrow, it demanded your full concentration and a fair bit of energy. After this we ventured on to the ice surface of the reservoir. There was enough snow on ice to slow you down a bit, but it was a nice break from the last trail. We stay on the ice for a couple kilometers and then head back on to a packed trails via a hike-a-bike through some thigh deep snow. From this point the trails were a lot of fun, well packed, twisty, and flowing. Good times! I really don’t want to say where we were, but it’s a great place to be biking in the dark, in the snow, with no one around but good friends and the stars! After all of this we found ourselves back on the bike path and finished our loop around the reservoir. Thanks to those who joined me on this special outing; Gord, Kayla, Mike, & Rick! Till next time, James VB
