HAPPY NEW YEAR!
My first COC event of 2011 was a ton of fun as 24 enthusiastic COC’ers gathered together at the Subway Soccer Centre for an exciting afternoon of indoor soccer. A nice mix of regulars and newcomers made for an interesting match which in the end required overtime to reach a decision. The Blue squad lead 2-0 after the first frame but by the end of the 2nd Gold had fought back to even things up at 4. Gold continued their strong play and were rewarded with their first lead of the game early in the third. Midway through the frame Gold added another but then with just minutes to go, Blue’s power forwards Michael and Esteban scored 2 key goals to draw their team even forcing overtime. In the extra frame, with momentum on their side, it wasn’t long before Blue completed the comeback on a nice goal by Barnes against the league’s #1 keeper Slawek Borkowski to earn a hard fought 8-7 victory. Congratulations to both teams on a very well played game. Thanks for keeping it clean and fun for everyone!
Prior to the start of today’s game we took a moment to honour our good friend Esteban Espinoza who will be leaving us next week to return to his homeland Chile. He arrived in Canada 3 years ago and joined the COC in 2009. He regularly participated in both indoor and outdoor soccer events with the club and developed many friendships along the way. He is a gifted player who regularly displays some very fancy footwork on the field. As a result he was presented with the “COC Soccer’s Fanciest Footwork” award this afternoon along with a big bag of loonies to take back to Chile. (chocolate loonies that is. lol) It has been a real pleasure participating in COC events with Esteban and we wish him all the best as begins a new chapter in his life. Take care buddy, we’ll miss you!
Tonight’s "Player of the Game" award was presented immediately following the game to Andrew Parsons, who scored 3 goals for team Gold tonight! He joined the COC just over 3 years ago and has been attending indoor soccer events intermittently ever since. He is a very friendly individual who possesses solid athletic skills and displays great sportsmanship at every event. He is a team player who not only respects his fellow teammates but his opponents as well. He regularly demonstrates a positive attitude and consistently attempts to include fellow teammates in the play regardless of their ability. It has been an absolute pleasure having him attend my events and I look forward to sharing many more with him in the future. Congratulations Andrew on your well deserved award!
After the game, several participants traveled to the King’s Head for food & beverages. Thanks again to everyone who came out and made this such a great afternoon! I look forward to seeing you again next time.
