Sat, Jan 21 2012 - X Country Skiing - Boulton Creek (View Original Event Details)
|
We were originally worried about the temperature. As we drove out towards K-country the thermometer was stuck at -18C. We stopped and changed at the Barrier Lake information center, and they told us it is -3C in Peter Lougheed!
As we drove the 50km along Highway 40 we were amazed to watch the temperature change from -18C to -3C! A rise in temperature almost 3C/km!
The weather started out perfect. However, because of the temperature most of us had to rewax soon into the trip with a layer of pink wax.
Up until we reached Pocattera, most of the trails had lots of snow and were not trackset or even skier set. It was hard work going up Elk Pass and Thrwhitt and the conditions slowed us down. Mike B who was skate skiing had to turn back.
We stopped at the picnic table along Thrwhitt for a quick snack and to gather up the group.
We regrouped again at the intersection of Pocaterra and Whiskeyjack. About 2/3 of the group went down Whiskeyjack. The other 1/3 of the group (myself included) went down Pocattera and Packers to have a longer ski and avoid the steep sections of Whiskeyjack. We met Mike B. at the top of Packers.
The trail were groomed from Pocattera and Whiskeyjack onwards, and the group that went down Whiskeyjack said it was a fast descent.
After the ski we all went to Woody's in Kananaskis village.
Overall the group kept together and there were no mishaps.
Thanks all for coming out!
