Write Up:
It was an interesting day and we explored three galleries. At the first, the Art Gallery of Calgary, we saw works by Diana Thorneycroft: A People’s History. In her new series, Diana explores our nation's known disgraces where crimes by Canadians against fellow Canadians are exposed. In 14 separate and carefully constructed scenes using dolls, we are witness to impending public and private horrors and crimes committed against society's most vulnerable: our children, our discriminated, our disadvantaged. Tableau's included Louis Riel, the Dionne Quintuplets, diseases brought by Europeans that killed the natives and a variety of scenes featuring priests and some of the treatment of natives. It was thought-provoking.

Then we went for coffee at Giuseppe's an Italian food Market at 12th Ave and 1st St SW. The coffee was very good and all the food looked delicious. They kindly gave us a plate of cookies.

Our next stop was the Endeavour Arts Gallery, for the Fig Tee Foundation – As We See It Photo Exhibition. We gained insight into the work of international development and humanitarian aid organizations as they share images of the people, places and issues they address around the world. It is a collection of photographs taken by staff and volunteers working in the field in developing countries. We saw pictures from Nepal, Mexico and Ghana. While there, we learned of the Beakerhead festival coming in Sept. It is a festival marrying art with technology - check it out!

The last stop was Artpoint Gallery & Studios that featured three of their members: David Lynnes, Anne T. White and David Cheney. Both black & white and colour photography was shown. We spent quite a bit of time talking with Morris Prokop about his pictures of Nepal.

Thank you for joining me for this interesting day. Laura L
