Season 5 Week 5

Another great group of enthusiastic COC’ers gathered together at Vincent Massey Junior High School tonight to compete for the most coveted prize in all of COC sports, the Dodge Ball Cup, and vie for the right to have their name forever engraved on the infamous, Dodge Ball Wall of Fame! As customary, participants received their team assignment based on the playing card they randomly selected from the deck. Once everyone had checked in, we kicked off the evening with a short celebration in recognition of Marvin’s 400th event with the club where he was presented with a custom made cowboy hat and framed 8x10 collage featuring various highlights of his history with the COC. At the conclusion of the ceremony, participants gathered together with their teammates to introduce themselves and come up with a team name. After a few minutes of team bonding, the names were submitted and the quest for GOLD began with the first of 20 round robin match ups.

Each team played 10 times to determine their seeding for the playoffs. Black Friday and Team Marty finished with identical 6-4 records requiring a tie breaker match to decide first place. When the dust settled, Black Friday found themselves in top spot followed by Team Marty, Sunnyside Up (5-5-1) and finally Team 400 at 2-7-1.

In the semi-finals, both series went the distance but it was the bottom teams who doing the celebrating after 3rd place Sunnyside Up got by 2nd place Team Marty 2-1 and cellar dwellers Team 400 stunned #1 ranked Black Friday by the same margin.

In the medal round, both series once again required thrilling tie breakers to determine a winner. In bronze medal play, Black Friday salvaged a medal with a narrow victory over Team Marty while Team 400 completed their miracle rise from worst to first with an impressive 2-1 victory over Sunnyside Up to capture the gold! Congratulations Club 400 on your well earned Dodge Ball Cup victory tonight!!

After the tournament many of us headed over to BP’s where we enjoyed great food and fellowship while celebrating Marvin’s 400th and gold medal win! Thanks to all who joined me tonight, it was great fun!
