|
Although the day was calling for rain and thunder showers, our small group of 9 diehards was still determined to get away from the big city. We started the hike just after 9AM departing the parking area at the trail head. As we broke thru the tree line we were happily surprised to see the sun and blue skies. Continuing on over Paradise Creek, we started the first climb at the end of which, we arrived at Lake Annette. We rested for only a few moments for photos and to enjoy the beautiful green water of the lake and the snowcapped north face of Mount Temple.
The trail continued from Lake Annette, climbing up along the base of Mount Temple where we could see white clouds rolling over th e tops of the mountain. Passing Sentinel Pass junction, the trail descended to Horseshoe Meadows. Finally, we reached our goal—a series of waterfalls on the north side of Paradise Creek called The Giant Steps. There we relaxed and enjoyed our lunch in the tranquil serenity of the falls. As we finished our lunch, dark clouds rolled in bring with it ice and rain. As fast as it came it was gone again and we quickly setup for our group photo. Resisting the urge to stay, we returning the same way we came. Crossing back to Sentinel Pass junction, the sound of thunder was heard echoing down the valley. Arriving back at the vehicles, it was agreed to delay our return and stop for coffee next to the visitor’s center. Considering the forecast, the conditions exceeded our expectations. A delightful day with wonderful people in Paradise Valley!
