|
A great day to head up to Caldron Lake. Cool temperatures made travel easier and kept the creeks from rising too much. A strong and enthusiastic group made for a fun day. The detour we took worked worked out well and everyone managed it without much difficulty. The narrow section below Peyto Peak has some minor erosion but everyone in our group was fine with it as well. This trip would be much more difficult on a hot day as the glacial streams could easily double in size.
It was really amazing to see how much Peyto Glacier has melted since the first time I coordinated this hike with the COC back in 2005. I guess Peyto Hut will be a walk-up in about 20 years or so. I have attached a diagram in the photo album showing the extent of Peyto Glacier in 1917. From that, one could reasonably assume that the glacier might have reached all the way to Peyto Lake about 150 years ago. That would be truly mindboggling!
Thanks to everyone for making this a very satisfying day! Special thanks to Sylvia for kindly offering to drive.
Till the next adventure,
Marcel
