Sun, Jun 1 2014 - Highwood Pass (40) from Longview side (View Original Event Details)
|
A beautiful day for a ride with Lois and Mike. We kinda thought we might have more folks with it being a quiet day on the calendar but perhaps the late decision to ride the Highwood meant some missed it. Well miss it you did :-p
We had a great ride.
Weather held nicely. Shortly after starting we had a five minute iffy spell where I noticed some spots of humidity on my sleeve. The occasional cloud teased us by taking the sun away for very short spells. And despite applying sun cream before the ride, apparently you need to put it on your legs too to protect that winter whiteness. My knees and calves have an accelerated start to a tan now, just short of a burn.
Two weeks until the gate opens allowing them gasoline behemoths up the road. For those considering riding from the south gate, you should know the following. The bridge at Lineham Creek is still missing in action (barriers still there for the amazingly balanced rock stars. A (somewhat)temporary gravel bypass for the rest of us. It's rideable but rough and some may prefer walking.
There are a number of half road width washouts that are gravel and not currently nicely paved, but can be ridden around just fine. Don't hit them at speed.
Finally the road is still snow covered about 1-2km before the top of the pass. Some have started a narrow track through the snow but it may not go all the way. By next weekend it may be better.... who knows - go find out.
