Tue, Mar 10 2015 - Barrier Lake - Prairie View/Jewell Pass Loop (View Original Event Details)
|
A spectacular day in Kananaskis country complete with clear blue skies, bright warm sunshine and double digit temperatures. With only 2 cars in the parking lot we didn't cross paths with another soul until we reached McConnell Ridge, our lunch spot. For the next hour or so we kicked back, relaxed and worked on our tans then reluctantly began our decent via Jewel Pass. Trail conditions were much better on the way down, with more snow pack than ice under our feet. The falls were still frozen but there was no mistaking the soothing sound of running water just behind that big wall of ice (spring is coming!) Not long afterwards, we arrived at the west end of the lake (near Jewell Bay Campground) and completed the final few kilometers along the shores of Barrier Lake. Overall trail conditions were fair on the way up with several icy sections, good on the way down and some fairly muddy areas over the final couple kilometers along the lakeshore. Hiking time was approximately 5 hours plus an hour for lunch & tanning.
Many thanks to Rob, Sarah and Pascale for joining me today. You guys made it even more amazing!
