Write Up:Beautiful weather for a hike. The event was full of changes beginning with driver cancellations, forcing me to pull from the waitlist according to who was able to drive; we had last minute withdrawals and changes continued throughout the day. We spoke to staff at the information center and were advised Canyon campground was closed for construction and so was the parking lot from where I planned to start the event. We started from William Watson Lodge instead. Here, Chris proclaiming to know the way, took off around and behind the lodge, without a trail or pathway, only one other got away with him, while the rest of us took the actual pathway down to the lake trail. Please know that this behavior is not typical of COC nor is it acceptable, we stay together as a group, unless otherwise discussed. He did meet up with us a short ways ahead, without delaying the event. The hike along the lake shaded by trees was wonderful, and the water was so low we were also able to walk in the sun, alongside the lake on the rocks. We had lunch on the picnic tables, and returned the way we came. From William Watson Lodge we walked over to the trail head for Marl Lake Loop, which is also now called Elkwood Loop on some maps, which added confusion to the day. The distance of the loop is also different now than what was indicated on my older detailed Kananaskis Lakes map. One member complained about the elevation gain on Marl Lake Loop, which really surprised me coming from someone professing to be an advanced hiker…really? The day was a mix. Thanks to the two drivers and to those that were on standby to drive if needed. Thanks for coming out.
