The day started off cold, but sunny with little wind. The air was clear, giving us great views of the Highwood Range covered in snow from yesterday’s storm. We made good time drafting each other, and then lost it when I made everyone repeatedly stop for photos. Talking about drafting, I got to draft a deer that decided to jump onto the road about a foot ahead of my front tire as I was coasting down a hill at about 50km/hr. It spun its hooves on the pavement and just managed to stay ahead of me as it bounded off into the woods. I don’t know which of us was the more startled!

We had a moderate headwind on the return trip, but the downhill gradient pretty much compensated for it. After returning to Turner Valley we replenished our much depleted energy stores with burgers and pie at the Coyote Moon Café. This trip is definitely worth doing again before the Winter Gate reopens on May 15.
