The early morning chill and few sprinkles as we left Calgary
evaporated into a gorgeous sunny day for hiking in Lake Louise
with easy parking and stunning views.
A few people puzzled
over why the peak is only called “Fair”view Mountain so I did a
little etymological research. It is only our modern sensibilities
that see "fair" as just okay. The Old English and Germanic root of
the word means pleasing or beautiful. In fact, “fair” is used
positively in many contexts, e.g. beautiful, unblemished, light in colour,
equitable, adequate, good weather, and free from obstacles as in having an
unobstructed view. Our view from the summit was both beautiful and free from
obstacles so "Fairview" Mountain is an apt descriptor after all.
Thanks
to everyone for making up such a positive and encouraging party.
