After meeting at Elbow Falls parking lot at 10 am, our group of 8 set off for Powderface Pass (Saddle) via the Powderface Creek Trail. As expected, fat-tire bikes and other hikers had packed the trail down sufficiently for the first 2.7 km to allow walking without snowshoes. After the junction to Prairie Link, the remaining 3.5 km to the pass was handled by 6 of the 8 in snowshoes, although hiking w/o was possible. A moderate but steady pace got us to our destination by 1:00 pm. Despite the temperatures hovering at zero, a brisk 40 km/h wind made the pass chilly. Lunch was had 200 metres back down the trail in the shelter of trees, which was very comfortable. We arrived back at the parking lot at 3:00 pm. This is a recommended route for fit groups who like a moderate and steady pace, and are equipped to deal with changing temperatures as they climb to the pass.
