Day 1 - It was a dark and chilly morning. In Calgary that is. After our morning coffee, we headed out to the mountains and boy were they a pretty sight, all snow capped. Reaching the Barrier Lake Visitor centre gave us an idea of what to expect on the trail. There was about 3 inches of snow. Another group of campers who were at the trailhead carpark had left their car door open after leaving! So we played good samaritan and locked the car for them. The hike in was pretty with snow covering everywhere. We arrived at the camp ground rather late in the afternoon as we leisurely hiking our way in. So instead of doing a hike that afternoon, we ended playing frisbee courtesy of Steve and Karen. By the way, the frisbee doubled as their dinner plate! You learn something new everyday, ingenious! Starting the campfire in the evening was a challenge as all the wood was very damp. It was also very cold brrrrrr.... We literally had to split wood to make burnable kindling. We didn't quite sing around the campfire but we appreciated it's warmth nonetheless.
Day 2 - The chinook finally came in and it got a lot warmer. All save Ben (who had a stiff ankle, ya ya) decided to hike up to 3 Isle Lake. Apparently, a large part of the trail up was under 2 feet of snow and it made the hike up interesting. The group who had left the car door open came into the campground so we got friendly with them and also decided to rub it in somewhat. We also got some free Marshmellows from them. Juan who had never had a roasted marshmellow in his life was in ecstacy after Cam made him one. Ditto for Moshen, who never camped in his life was having a great time, save for a teensy weensy tent. He's going to get a palatial one the next time. Then in the middle of the night as we were all sleeping soundly, it started to rain, but it didn't matter it just made the might so much nicer.
Day 3 - Sigh. do we have to go home already? It was a beautiful day hiking out, the snow had melted allowing us to view the countryside uncovered. the fall colours plus the scattering of remaining snow made a it view not to forget.
