Write Up:
Thirteen of us headed out to Lake Louise in the rain and clouds. But as we headed up to Saddle Pass, at about the 2 km mark, the sun came out! Thus started the first of many clothing adjustments as we went through a few cycles of sun, snow and clouds throughout the day. The snow was never deeper than a few inches, so the footing was good. Each type of weather condition provided its own charm.
We were not disappointed in the stands of larches on Saddleback and their coating of snow made for interesting pictures.
We stopped for lunch at the top of Saddlebook just before the descent into Sheol Valley. No one had been to Sheol Valley before so we didn't know what to expect. We were all thrilled with the views, with more larches and the imposing Sheol Mountain.
The Sheol Valley trail joins the Paradise Valley Trail at a scenic bridge over Paradise Creek allowing a great view of Mt Temple. This was a pretty spot for a snack. We then proceeded aproximately 2.8 km to the junction with the Moraine Lake Trail. Following this trail for about 3.5 km took us back to the parking lot. The entire loop took a little under 7 hours.
Everyone thought this was a great loop. For future trips, I would consider having a car shuttle with some cars at the Paradise Valley parking lot. It only saves about 2.5 km but avoids the Moraine Lake Trail which is really a muddy horse trail with limited views.
Thanks to everyone for not letting the early morning rain deter you and for joining me on this explorer hike. Laura L
