Fri, Jan 11 2008 - Beginner Beginner Snow Shoe - Hogarth Lakes with Lunch at Pocaterra Hut (View Original Event Details)
|
What a great way to start a snowshoe with lunch at the Pocaterra Hut. I’ve never been there before and didn’t expect much from a “hut”, but boy was I pleasantly surprised. Lots of room & tables, and a real fireplace ready to be lit !!!! The contingency from the Bow Valley got there first and had a leisurely lunch. When the rest of the snowshoers from Calgary joined us, they had snowshoes in hand and were ready to go. We got in our cars and headed off to the trailhead.
The trailhead was easy to find, however the actual trail was a bit tricky throughout as we had many unmarked forks in the snow to choose, and none were listed on the map ! Lots of snow all around, and the trail was broken for us. Our mascot, Tiga, was playing in the deep snow and chasing ski poles !!!
We snowshoed along the banks of the lakes, and I subjected everyone to a snowshoe race once we reached an open land area…. We lined up and on the count of three, ran across powder snow, some of us head over heel into the snow !!! and Rod won !! We continued on the trail and finished our looped trail. Our mascot for the event was chomping at the bits to do it all over again, while the rest of us were ready for something hot to drink !!!
Six out of twelve of us never snowshoed before, and all of us have catapulted from Snowshoe 101 to intermediate !!! Oh and not to forget, Rod is ready to represent us at the Olympic Snowshoe races in 2010 !!! Welcome Lisa, Julia, Tara, and Darlene to the club :)
Encounters on the trail: Bird sounds, fellow snowshoers, a snow spider, lost pin, and lots of smiles & laughter !!
Thank you all for joining me and looking forward to the next one !!!
Happy Trails :)
