Write Up:
Burstall Pass is spectacular; it is one of the most dramatic destinations of a moderate hike in the Kananaskis area. Not only do you get a good view of Robertson Glacier on your way up, but once at the pass, you have a 360 degree panoramic view of Mount Leval, Snow Peak, Whistling Rock Ridge, and multiple other peaks and ridges. The hike up was excellent; we had a good pace and reached Burstall Pass is about 2.5 hours. Which was fortuitous - as although it was cloudy most of the way up, we did not have to deal with any rain. We were challenged by the various steams that we had to cross at the alluvial plain. In some spots, the crossing was somewhat adventurous, but we all made it - with a little help from each other. The trail up to the pass is excellent - a bit of a steep slough, but dirt mainly underfoot which made it comfortable. We reached the pass in time for lunch - and the view was spectacular. But after a short lunch break, the wind started intensifying and the clouds became more threatening. So we packed up and headed back down the trail. We were barely on our way down when it started raining - and it poured all the way back to the cars. We were all fairly wet and cold so decided to stop at the Peter Lougheed Centre - where we were treated to a blazing fire (started in our honour), and a chance to get to know each other better. Once a little drier and a lot warmer, we headed back to the city and arrived at Brentwood around 6 pm. We covered 15kms, and 485 metres. Thanks to a terrific group for being such good sports when the weather turned.
