Superb weather; spectacular scenery; and a fantastic group; the perfect combination for an incredible day in the mountains. Fourteen of us met at 8:15 am and were on the 10 am shuttle bus to Sunshine Meadows. We headed from there to Wawa Ridge, with excellent views all the way - in fact, as you start essentially at the tree line, the entire route is open with views of mountains or sparkling lakes your constant companion. After a short respite at Wawa, we headed towards Rock Isle Lake - stopping at Standish Lookout for lunch and great photos ops. As we were making good time, we decided to head down to the three lakes - Rock Isle, Larix and Grizzly and then attempt the climb to Quartz Summit. These three lakes are beautiful; they are surrounded by larches, but it is too early yet for the larches to have turned colour. We took time for short rests and photos at each of the lakes. By 2:30 pm or so, we were at the junction of Quartz Summit, and decided to head that way. While traversing Sunshine Meadows, you can see fantastic mountain peaks - (in the summer this meadow is also filled with incredible wildflowers - but it is too late for them now). After half an hour or so, seven of us decided to head back to the chalet for refreshments - while the other seven tackled Quartz Summit. They enjoyed the climb, and had an opportunity to photograph Mt. Assiniboine from the summit. We ended the day at the Rose and Crown in Banff - securing a table for 14 - with the shuttle bus driver joining us. He plans to become a member of COC. We had a great time with lots of good conversation and laughs. Thanks to all who came out.
