Week 11!
Season Finale! Tonight marked the conclusion of a very successful 11 week run of COC dodge ball. The general feedback was overwhelmingly positive and planning is well underway for a follow up winter/spring season beginning Wednesday January 14th. Keep your eye on the calendar for exact dates and locations.
You could feel the excitement in the air tonight as 30 enthusiastic individuals made their way inside Western Canada High School with just one thing on their minds……bringing home the GOLD for Christmas!!! As players drew cards to determine teammates, you could quickly see the potential for some great rivalries developing over the course of the evening. The 20 game round robin saw each team play 10 times before heading into the playoff rounds. Djingle Balls came out hard and fast finishing with an impressive 8-2 record but were followed closely by Schweddy Balls at 7-3. Xmas Balls picked up 4 wins to go with their 6 losses and finally it was the Dodgezillas who struggled to the finish with a 1-9 record.
In the semi-final round, 4th place Dodgezillas did their best to upset the over confident #1 ranked Djingle Balls but on this night it just wasn't meant to be. Djingle Balls won their series in 2 straight games while Schweddy Balls and Xmas Balls battled through a long grueling 3 game series. In the end Schweddy Balls won the tiebreaker and advanced to the gold medal series to play their arch rivals the Djingle Balls.
The bronze medal series went to Xmas Balls who played like a team possessed after losing their chance to compete for gold. “There was no way I was leaving here without a medal!” said Mandy D. who is currently the top ranked female in the overall dodge ball medal standings. “I really thought we had a shot at the gold tonight." "Obviously a tough pill to swallow but I was happy with our teams’ gritty performance.”
The highly anticipated gold medal series did not go the way #1 ranked Djingle Balls predicted as they were hit hard by a perfect storm. Schweddy Balls who seemed to gain momentum as the evening wore on, made short work of Djingle Balls, bouncing them from the gold medal series in two straight games. “We performed when it mattered most” said veteran league leading gold medalist Marvin Dragland. “I see the way opposing players look at me”. They think just because I’m 50 I can’t keep up, but the 4 gold medals hanging around my neck suggest otherwise!” All star dodge baller Spencer C couldn’t agree more. “We underestimated the old guy and it cost us." "We won’t make that mistake again!”
