When I posted this event, my goal was to squeeze in one last hike before the ski season and I wasn’t expecting great conditions for a hike. Just walking out my door, it was 8 degrees and the temperature went UP on the way to the trailhead. Once at the trailhead, the temp returned to a stunning 8degrees (K-Country Nov 15 !!!!)
Once the Calgary group arrived, we geared up and we all had our icers :) We started on the trail which follows the valley floor and has a steady small incline all the way. You couldn’t see the incline for the most part, but our legs sure felt it ! The scenery along the way was “close” for the lack of a better word. There are towering mountains on both sides of the trail, and they look like you can just reach out and touch them !! At the halfway mark, we finally found the ice that I have been promising everyone since I was the warrior icer!!! We did encounter an unprepared group who were hiking in jeans & sneakers, and they had to turn back at this point since they were slip sliding away ! Further in, we came upon snow, and then it accumulated once at the campground. We cleared snow off of the picnic tables, sat down and had lunch. Since the temperatures were warmer than expected, our lunch turned out to be longer than expected which was really nice !!
After lunch, we headed the 1.5 mins to Ribbon Falls !!! We joked with another group when they told us at lunch that the falls were one minute & 30 secs, and we didn’t know if we could make that last push !!!
The falls were picturesque. Very different from ones that I’ve seen on other hikes. They were semi-frozen at the top, and cascadde down this flat wall of rock. It looked like ones you’d see in hotel lobbies, and yet here we are out in K-Country with this beauty in its natural surroundings !!!
Lots of photos were taken. At this time of year, there was 30cm of snow already and we couldn’t proceed any further beyond the falls – I will definitely be back next summer for further exploring !!
We all had a great time, and it was so nice to be out on this lovely day. Back in the parking lot, everyone expressed this, and I got a big hug from one member, which was the icing on the cake for my day – this is why I love to Coordinate with the COC !!!
Thank you for joining me on my hike. I had a great time, and I hope you did as well. Do you think I can squeeze another in ??!!!
Encounters on the trail: Whiskey jacks & other birds, grouse, unprepared hikers, prepared hikers, mud, slush, ice, snow, picturesque falls, great conversations, and lots of smiles!
Note to self: Great hike for Mom’s visit
Happy Trails :)
