Sat, Jan 10 2009 - Canyon Creek Ice Cave (View Original Event Details)
|
What a gorgeous day! The weather could not have been any better, we enjoyed great company walking along the relatively mundane access road, and the cave sure did not disappoint. Getting there was the biggest challenge (very dry snow on the slope leading up to the cave set us back a bit), but immediately in from the entrance one is rewarded by unique ice formations. At the 'end' by the ice wall we finally found the Superman Passage and most of us squeezed through - a very rewarding spot indeed. Coming back, a few explored another side passage along the left side of the main entry. Konstantin found a way through from there to the cave entrance, while the rest of us squeezed back through the passage as we had entered it. This is also the area where we encountered the most rat poop, though overall consensus was that the cave was quite clean - dusty for the most part, but not muddy. We spent just under 1.5 hours in the cave as we had set ourselves a turn-around time, but would have loved to explore some more. Time flies when you're having fun in there! At least 2 hours would be recommended.
To end off a great day, we stopped in Bragg Creek at the Boardwalk Cafe for hot drinks and more great company. (Word of caution is that the service there leaves a bit to be desired). Thank you all for making this a great day out.
Note to people wishing to coordinate this in the future - I'd pass along the same advice I was given and to keep the group size to 6-8 people. Also, study the map beforehand so that you know where to seach for the smaller side passages. They're easy to miss otherwise.
