Week 16!

A wild one tonight folks! Once again a great combination of newbies combined with the usual suspects came out for a fast paced evening of dodging, ducking, diving and dipping. Teams of 7 battled hard throughout the evening with one eye on the ball and one on the majestic Dodge Ball Cup that stood gloriously in the corner of the gym waiting to be awarded to this week’s champions.

As usual we played a 20 game round robin style tournament with each team playing 10 times to determine seeding for the playoffs. It was one of the closest round robins to date with all four teams finishing within just 2 wins of each other! Come Get Some lead the pack with a 6-4 record followed by Belgium Balls and Dancing Ducks who shared 5-5 records. Belgium Balls received the 2nd place seeding however, due to its winning record against the Dancing Ducks. Last but not least, it was Shake & Bake finishing at 4-6.

In the semi-finals, the #1 ranked Come Get Some ran into a team possessed, as the last place Shake & Bake turned up the heat cooking them in 2 straight games. “I saw that look in Brent’s eyes and I knew we were in trouble” said a shaken Mark Chittick after being humbled in the series. We took them too lightly and it cost us a shot at the gold.” Brent’s teammate Duane Verity praised the sportsmanship demonstrated by Come Get Some, particularly that of all-star veteran Spencer Callaghan who called himself out to end the series when he inadvertently stepped over centre. “To see that kind of sportsmanship displayed when you are the last man standing in an elimination game is almost unheard of.” “I was really impressed!”

The other semi-final series saw a highly entertaining battle between the 2nd place Belgium Balls and 3rd place Dancing Ducks who entered into the series with identical 5-5 round robin records. It took 3 games to decide a winner and when the dust settled it was Belgium Balls who advanced to the gold medal series. “This is an outrage!” exclaimed a disgusted Chirag Patel when asked for his thoughts on the series. “I slipped Duane an extra $20 to ensure I got paired up with Rob and Gerardo and we still lost! I demand a refund!" In a related story, the president of the CDBA (Canadian DodgeBall Association) is now investigating allegations of possible team tampering.

In the medal round, Come Get Some, despite being spanked by the 4th place team in the semi-finals, regrouped in time to defeat the Dancing Ducks in 2 straight games to salvage a bronze. “Sure it was disappointing to finish 3rd but lets face it, my gold medal winning streak had to end sometime” said an indifferent Chelsea Rieger after the series win. “To be honest I was running out of room to store my gold medals anyway” she joked while talking to several reporters outside the dressing room.

The gold medal series saw two very evenly matched teams go to war in what would turn out to be a highly entertaining 3 game series. In game 1 Belgium Balls easily defeated Shake & Bake and it looked like it would be over in a hurry. “I looked over and saw Fluffy grinning ear to ear. You could see she was pumped at the prospect of taking home gold” said Allan Torster. “I admit it didn’t’ look good at that point but then Duane stepped up and provided some much needed leadership just before game 2.” “I remember him telling us to just go out and have fun and so that’s exactly what we did.” The rest is history as Shake & Bake stormed back to take the next 2 games, capturing the gold with a 2-1 series victory. “It was a thrill to win at my very first outing” exclaimed an ecstatic Richelle Mersky who shared the experience with rookie teammates Veronique and Alison who were also making their COC dodge ball debut.

“It was a total blast! I’ve never seen that side of Brent before. The emotion he showed jumping into Duane’s arms after the win reminded me of a scene from Brokeback Mountain” laughed Alison when asked how she enjoyed her first event. “It was definitely a great time and I will be back to defend my title.” Congratulations Shake & Bake on your win!
