Week 15!

Another full house tonight of 30 eager participants, each with big dreams of winning gold! As the Dodge Ball Cup stood gloriously under very tight security in the corner of the gymnasium, the 4 team tournament got underway. Teams battled hard through the usual 20 game round robin style tournament playing 10 games each before advancing to the playoff rounds. Ballslicious and Hurlers each completed the round robin with identical 7-3 records however first place honours went to Ballslicious based on their 2-1 record against the Hurlers. The Superstars grabbed 3rd spot finishing at 5-5 while the struggling Balls of Fire managed just 2 wins finishing the round robin with a dismal 2-8 record.

In the semi-finals, the #1 ranked Ballslicious cruised through their series extinguishing the Balls of Fire in 2 straight games. “We definitely expected more fight out of the Scutchings brothers tonight.” said a surprised James Tonkin after the quick series victory. “Any team with a 1 - 2 punch like that has to be respected, I really don’t know how they managed to finish 4th.”

The other semi-final series saw a highly entertaining battle between the 2nd place Hurlers and 3rd place Superstars. It took 3 games to determine a winner but when the dust settled it was the Hurlers who came out on top, advancing to the gold medal round versus Ballslicious. “I feel like I let my teammates down.” said a dejected Michael Miller. I haven’t been out in a while and it certainly showed tonight.” Teammate Spencer Callaghan was also quick to point the finger at himself for the disappointing series loss. “I blew chunks tonight, plain and simple. “All I know is I didn’t deserve the honour of playing next to a living legend like Marvin Dragland." “Hopefully he can find it in his heart to give me another chance down the road.”

In the medal round, the Superstars, despite their emotionally draining semi-final series loss defeated Balls on Fire 2 games to 1 to salvage a bronze medal. “It felt great to come back and win the bronze” said rookie Audrey Crepin who began her COC dodge ball career last month and has yet to capture gold. “It’s been a lot of fun and I am looking forward to my first gold medal experience and seeing my name engraved on the Dodge Ball Cup.”

The gold medal series saw the top ranked teams go head to head. In the round robin it was Ballslicious who defeated the Hurlers in two of three meetings but when the chips were down it was the Hurlers who out worked Ballslicious and captured the Cup in 2 straight games! “It felt great to have that gold medal around my neck again!” exclaimed Martha Dias, who hasn’t won a championship since back in October. “I almost didn’t come tonight but I’m sure glad I did now!” Teammate Jon Nelson, a long time veteran was also thrilled with the victory. “At my age you cherish every win.” I mean let’s face it, I’m not getting any younger and injuries are becoming a factor as well.” Congratulations Hurlers on your win!
