Week 13!

Another fun filled evening of dodge ball at Jennie Elliott Elementary School in SW Calgary. It took a little getting used to, but many of us are now beginning to adjust to the faster pace a smaller gymnasium brings to this event. Balls were flying through the air at a much faster rate and with less room to maneuver it was much more challenging to avoid getting hit!

Tonight we returned to our regular format of teams of 7 after playing just 6 aside last week. I decided to make teams in advance tonight as opposed to having players draw random cards to determine their teammates. The result was fairly evenly matched teams with some very exciting games. The play was fast and furious as teams battled hard for a shot at the gold.

The evening consisted of the usual 20 game round robin style tournament with teams playing a total of 10 games each to determine rankings before heading into the playoffs. The very enthusiastic and energetic Thunder Balls stormed their way to first with a 7-3 round robin record followed closely by Fluff Balls at 5-5. Kiss My Balls and Hair Balls required an additional tie breaker game to determine their seeding as both teams finished with identical 4-6 records. The tie breaker went to Hair Balls giving them a 3rd place finish while Kiss My Balls fell to fourth.

In the semi-finals, 2nd place Fluff Balls got by the #3 ranked Hair Balls two games to one while last place Kiss My Balls upset the #1 ranked Thunder Balls by the same margin setting the stage for a possible Cinderella story finish. “I looked across the court and saw a team full of overrated players” said an ecstatic Franco Glavina after sending the Thunder Balls packing. “I knew we had a better team than our record indicated and it felt good to prove it.”

After a strong round robin performance but disappointing semi-final loss, the Thunder Balls found themselves needing a series victory over Hair Balls just to squeak out a bronze medal finish. “I thought for sure we would be playing for the gold tonight” said a visibly shaken Michelle Connolly. “I had trouble focusing all night”. “Spencer’s bright red socks were a constant distraction for me”. When the dust settled Thunder Balls did manage to walk away with the bronze after a convincing 2-0 series victory over the lowly Hair Balls. “I don’t know what went wrong” said a dejected Brent Kienzle. “I had friends in the stands and I really wanted to show them I could play this game.” “I think I created too much pressure for myself and lost focus”.

The gold medal series saw last place Kiss My Balls duke it out with the #2 ranked Fluff Balls. It was an exciting long series requiring all 3 games to decide a winner. Both teams had solid veterans who had been to the Cup before and knew what it took to win. In the end it was Kiss My Balls lead by 6 time gold medal champion Marvin Dragland who claimed the victory. “It was nice to grab one more gold before heading down to Mexico next week.” said a jovial Marvin Dragland who will be competing in the Annual Cancun Classic Dodge Ball tournament next week. “I will do my best to bring back the gold for Canada!”
