Four of us snow shoed from the Elk Pass parking lot to Elk Lakes cabin. The distance is approximately 10 km and the elevation gain and loss is approximately 240 metres one way. It took us five hours to get there (lots of picture taking)and four to return.
We were very lucky to have good weather and sunny skies. While the temperature seemed to approach 10 degrees, the snow was relatively firm and easy to snow shoe on. We heard that for skiing, the snow was very sticky.
There is a new snow shoe trail from the parking lot, so you are on the XC ski trails only part of the time.
We had lunch at the picnic table on the Pass, and met some other cabin mates. Besides us four, there were two other groups of two and one solo traveller.
On arrival at the cabin, we sat in the sun for awhile, enjoying a hot drink. Then the four of us set out to explore Upper and Lower Elk Lakes. It was worth the extra trip (approximately 6 km return), as the mountain backdrops to the lakes were beautiful. As well, some of the streams were starting to run, revealing pretty green moss.
That evening we enjoyed our pasta potluck dinner. All occupants were in bed and quiet by 10 PM and the mattresses in the cabin are comfortable.
We were up by 7 AM or so the next day, and took some early morning sunrise pictures. After a leisurely breakfast, we were ready to head back by 10 AM. We were lucky to enjoy more blue skies on the way back.
For anyone interested in renting the cabin, you may be interested to know that you do not need to be a member of the Alpine Club of Canada. Non-members can book if there is any availability in the upcoming month.
