Sat, Jun 13 2009 - Lake Agnes / Big Beehive / Highline Trail / Plain of Six Glaciers Circuit (View Original Event Details)

We had a grand day out! When most people decide to go either to Lake Agnes or the Plain of Six Glaciers, we decided to cram it all into one long, but rewarding day. 19km and 840m of elevation later, we had encountered all of the following:
• Tourists and tourists galore. Those bear bells were motivation to stay ahead, so we made it up to Lake Agnes in exactly one hour.
The Highline Trail offered us a bit more solitude, but obviously Plain of Six Glaciers was busy again.
There just is nothing like hiking with 4,000 other people.
• Horses. Take one up to the Lake Agnes Teahouse for $150. We each saved $150 on this hike.
• Mirror Lake.
• Lake Agnes and the teahouse, with Devil’s Thumb and Mount St. Piran as the backdrop.
• Big Beehive. This spot gives a whole other perspective of Lake Louise, and this time of year was perfect for seeing turqouise water.
• Wildflowers. Lots of white dryads and a bunch of others that we don’t know the names of.
It’s so refreshing to finally see more than one flower along a trail.
• Waterfalls. These lines the trail to the Plain of Six Glaciers. Melting season has begun.
• Glaciers. We couldn’t count six, but we did see glaciers. Every so often we heard the big avalanche boom, just in time to see snow
plunge down in the distance a millisecond later.
• Abbott Pass Hut on the top of the Death Trap. This is the second-highest inhabitable structure in Canada at 2,925m.
• Climbers along the north shore of Lake Louise.
• … and obviously the troopers of the COC who lasted through all this distance :-). It was a feast for the eyes!
Thank you all making this yet another wonderful day out in the mountains. Welcome to the COC, Brad!
