Calgary Outdoor Club - Events - Checklists - Winter Sports
Questions about equipment? Send them to safety@calgaryoutdoorclub.com.
Minimum When Participating With COC
Equipment (most items can be rented from U of C Outdoor Centre or Sports Rent):
- Skiing: Skis, Poles and Ski Boots
- Boarding: Board and Snowboard Boots
- Snow Shoeing: Snow Shoes, Poles
Supplies:
- Daypack
- Plenty of Water
- Energy-rich snacks (dried fruit, chocolate, energy bars etc)
- Avoid bringing carbonated drinks which may explode with a lot of movement
- Avoid drinking boxes since they cannot be re-sealed if you do not finish them or want to save some for later
Dress in layers (see article from MEC):
- Synthetic underwear layer to wick moisture away from skin
- Wool or synthetic (fleece) warming layer(s)
- Water/wind proof outer layer to protect you from the elements
- Do *NOT* wear cotton (including jeans), especially for your inner layer. Cotton will hold
moisture (and cold) against your body, rather than wicking it away like a synthetic layer will.
Protect your skin and extremities:
- Gloves or Mitts
- Toque or Headband, Neck Warmer
- Warm/waterproof boots
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen (snow glare can give you a vicious burn)
- UV blocking chapstick
Additionally, What You Might Need When Going (Especially On Your Own)
Equipment:
- Equipment Repair Kit
- "Sit-Upon": small closed-cell foam pad
- Garbage bag to line daypack for water proofing
- Camera
Supplies:
- Extra Snacks
- Toilet paper in ziploc bag, extra bag to carry paper out
- Plastic/garbage bag to carry out garbage
- Thermos of hot liquids
Clothing:
- Ski Goggles
- Snow pants/snow suit
- Extra pair of socks, mitts, gloves, etc for if the others get wet and uncomfortable
- Ice cleats (slip on over your shoes). We recommend
Stabil-Icers available at
Lee Valley Tools (near Costco South), and
some other stores in Calgary. Also good are "Spikey Plus" made by
Charlet Moser Company, available at MEC and Coast Mountain Sports.
- Gaiters
- Those little heat things for your mitts or boots
Emergency:
- First Aid Kit
- Flashlight (it gets dark earlier than you think)
- Emergency Heat Source (ie. candles, matches)
- Basic understanding of hypothermia, signs and what to do
- Personal identification
- Emergency whistle (use SOS code if in trouble)
- Map and compass
- Collapsible shovel
- Nylon tarp
