Itinerary:
We will be starting at the Fitzsimmons trail head which is 2.8 km's north of Highwood Junction. (Intersection of Hwy 40, Hwy 541, and SR 940) This ride is 27 km’s and not difficult technically – mostly smoother double track. We will be not be going at a fast pace, but please be sure you are capable of riding 27 km’s with +/- 400 m elevation gain. This loop ride starts with a few km’s of pavement and then on gravel of SR940 to the Etherington campground. From there on we are on double track and some singletrack. The views improve as we ride west, then north and drop down to Baril Creek. North of Baril creek we are near the base of Mt Armstrong and there is a great view also towards Fording River Pass. On to Fitzsimmons creek where another fast (if you like) downhill awaits. Note: The end of this ride usually involves crossing the Highwood River - It is wide there and an easy crossing at this time. There is an alternate route that avoids the crossing if the water did happen to be too high. As the river is right at the end of the trip, bring some old shoes for the river crossing. We can throw them across to the other side before we start out. That way we can change into the old shoes for the river crossing and keep your cycling shoes dry.
