Itinerary:
***PLEASE READ ENTIRE DESCRIPTION BEFORE SIGNING UP***

This trip is subject to the availability of backpack permits in the Grand Canyon. My first choice for this trip is April 11-24 2010 with the 4-17 as alternates. We should know by mid to late December. Plan B might involve Havasu Canyon which borders Grand Canyon National Park.

Our plan is to fly in to Las Vegas and rent vehicle(s). From there, it is about a five hour drive to Flagstaff. Over the next 12 days we should be able to get in some pretty amazing hikes. The weather in April for the American Southwest is usually quite mild(sometimes hot!) and ideal for hiking. Accommodation will be a mix of camping and budget motels.

Here is a sample itinerary:
Day 1- Early AM flight to Las Vegas/Drive to Flagstaff
Day 2- Explore Flagstaff/Sedona w/possible easy hike
Day 3- Grand Canyon Backpack (Difficult)
Day 4- Grand Canyon Backpack(Difficult)
Day 5- Grand Canyon Backpack (Difficult)
Day 6- Page, AZ/Antelope Canyon Photography Hike (Easy)
Day 7- Bryce Canyon/Hike TBD (Easy)
Day 8- Bryce Canyon/Navajo,Peekaboo,Queen Gdn Trail(Mod to Diff)
Day 9- Zion Canyon/Hike TBD (Easy)
Day 10-Zion Canyon/Angels Landing/West Rim (Difficult)
Day 11-Zion Canyon/Hike TBD-Group Choice(Mod to Diff)
Day 12-North Zion Canyon/The Subway(Mod) -or- Backpack:Hop/La Verkin/Beartrap/Kolob (Mod)
Day 13-St George UT/Snow Canyon(Easy)/ -or- Flex Day
Day 14-Las Vegas/Explore/Catch evening flight

*All hikes will be at a moderate pace*

The total driving distance for this trip would be around 1500 Km with Las Vegas-Flagstaff as the longest drive(5 hours). Some days would have about 2-3.5 hours driving while on other days we may not need to drive at all. This will leave a lot of time for exploring.

GRAND CANYON 2010 PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS:
In order to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable trip, please consider the following:

Valid Canadian or US Passport- You must also be eligible to enter the United States.

High Level of Fitness- You should have completed D5 backpack trips or D6 scrambles in the past year and have a high level of fitness since there may not be any official ‘training trips’ beforehand. I may organize some difficult snowshoe/hiking trips(depending on conditions) if people would like to further improve their fitness level. Past scrambling experience will be helpful as it will closely resemble some of the elevation gains/losses on this trip and prepare you for possible exposure on some of the hikes. Your skill/fitness level should be easily identifiable through your past COC history or through a reliable reference. All participants will be pre- screened.

Good Health- You should have no medical issues which might impair your ability to complete the trip. This may include but not limited to: knee/back problems; heart condition; vertigo issues or any previous injury/condition which may be aggravated by this trip. If in doubt, please consult your physician. You should also be willing to discuss any condition which may affect your performance/safety to the coordinator.

A Flexible Schedule- Since the time frames for this trip will not be known until/if the Grand Canyon backpack permits are obtained, participants need to be flexible . Right now, April 11-24 is the preferred time with April 4-17 as alternate dates.

Finances(Estimated)-
Airfare: budget $300.00-$550.00 CAN
Medical Insurance: $50.00CAN
Lodging: Motels $25.00-$40.00US/person/night--- Camping $8.00-$15.00US/person/night
Car Rental: $225.00US/person
Fuel: $50.00US/person
Grand Canyon Permits $5.00US/person/night
US National Park Annual Pass $25.00US/person
Food: We can pick-up breakfasts/lunches at local supermarkets while we could eat dinners at 'cool' little restaurants that we might find while we are down there.

Commitment-Only those with a strong desire to do this trip should sign up. This is especially important if the trip goes ahead as some of the logistics will need to be handled quickly. Those who are indecisive may be moved off the list. In the meantime, I will try to provide everyone with as much information as possible about the trip to allow participants to make informed decisions.

A Positive Attitude-As with any trip, if everyone is willing to contribute something to the event then the better the event will be. It is sometimes the little things which make the difference between a good trip and a great trip.

DEPOSITS ARE REQUIRED TO HOLD YOUR SPOT ON THE TRIP:
A $25.00 deposit will be required from each participant by November 15, 2009.

A second deposit of $500.00 will be required by January 1, 2010. This deposit will go toward airfare. I am hoping to get airfare in the $300-400/person range(incl tax). If we are not successful in getting permits then the deposits will be returned back to you.
