Itinerary: | |||||||
Distance: 14km return Height gain: 150m This trail follows the access road to Takakkaw Falls campground and is both easy to ski and trackset. The trail begins from the east end of the parking lot and ends at the start of the switchbacks, where we'll have a chance to have lunch and maybe do a little exploring if the avalanche danger is at Low. The return run follows the same road back to the parking lot. (Ref: Chic Scott's Ski Trails in the Canadian Rockies p. 135 & Parks Canada website). After the event, we will be stopping in Banff for dinner.
Yoho Valley Road is classified as Class 1 (Simple) avalanche terrain. We do not need to bring avalanche beacons or other avalanche safety equipment.

Winter Safety Considerations Entered by Bruce F on Dec 16, 2009 Terrain Classification: rated as Class 1 terrain by Parks Canada Conditions: Moderate above treeline Plan: The coordinator will be contacting the Lake Louise Info Centre on the morning of the event for current avalanche information and modifying the route or event location if necessary. The location will be changed if the avalanche danger rating is High or Extreme. Also note that we will not be venturing past the switchbacks. Note that COC event coordinators are volunteers and are not trained guides. All participants are responsible for assessing the current road conditions, current weather conditions, current trail conditions and current avalanche conditions for the trip. Note: If the forecast is for extremely cold temperatures or heavy snow, the event will be either cancelled or re-scheduled.
