Sherbrooke Lake and Niles Meadows is one of the most spectacular wildflower trips for this time of year. We'll be greedy though, so the lake and wildflowers won't be enough for us. Continuing past the Niles Amphitheatre we'll head up another step and aim for GR397057, which will allow 360-degree views of snowfields, Daly Glacier (the glacier that feeds Takkakaw Falls), the Iceline, the peaks surrounding Lake O'Hara, as well as the Continental Divide.

Description excerpted from Don't Waste Your Time in the Canadian Rockies by Kathy & Craig Copeland:

[B]oisterous creek and cascades ... begin just minutes beyond the lake's north shore. It's a short, moderate ascent through big timber, past the first crashing cascade, into an expansive meadow immediately above. ... Visiting the meadow - and easy 1 3/4 hours from the trailhead - adds a scenic climax and hint of adventure to a short outing. The views here outshine those at the lake. Small cascades will likely adorn the basin walls, enlivening the atmosphere with water music.

A little more than an hour from the spacious meadow, or a little more than three hours from the trailhead, you'll arrive at Niles Amphitheatre. Plan to drop your pack, pull up a rock, and break bread here. Seated on the grassy amphitheatre's west side you can study the trails switchbacking up the southeast shoulder of Mt. Niles then traversing toward Niles Meadow.

Though it's tempting, don't turn around after lunching at the amphitheatre. It's only a 30-minute ascent to Niles Meadow, where the panorama explodes, as will your sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. You'll be high in the alpine zone, overlooking Sherbrooke Valley, with a view of southern Yoho's monster peaks.

... A 40-minute ramble through alpine rubble will earn you the penultimate perch atop the saddle southwest of Mt. Niles. It overlooks Daly Glacier - a tongue of the Waputik Icefield and the source of Takkakaw Falls.
