Itinerary:

Saturday: Hike on Lake Oesa Trail and scramble up to the Hut

Sunday: Spend as much time at the Hut, enjoying the views; then scramble back down to Lake Oesa and possibly hike around a 2.8 km loop of the Lake O’Hara Shoreline Trail before catching the bus out.

Abbot Pass Hut http://www.alpineclubofcanada.ca/facility/abbot.htmll, a delightful stone cabin, is certainly the most unique of the ACC huts, both for its location and design. Sitting astride the wind-swept crest of Abbot Pass at the impressive height of 9,598 feet (2,925.5 meters), it is second only to the Neil Colgan hut as the highest permanent structure in Canada. Built in 1922 and earning a rich history ever since, this hut makes a perfect base for mountaineering attempts on Mts. Victoria and Lefroy or as an objective for strong hikers and scramblers.

There are three approaches to Abbot Pass in the summer, two of which require technical skills and experience. We will take the easiest and most logical way, i.e. to approach from the Lake O'Hara side, hiking the scenic trail to Lake Oesa then following the interesting and strenuous route up the wide scree gully which drops directly from the pass.

Lake Oesa is a turquoise treasure in an ultimate hiking area, clutched by colossal peaks on the Great Divide: Yukness Mt., Ringrose Peak, Glacier Peak, and Mounts Lefroy, Huber, and Victoria. Oesa is an extraordinary sight, one that every first-time O’Hara visitor should witness.
