Return Distance: 17km
Elevation Gain: 1250m Hike from Moraine Lake in the Valley of the Ten Peaks to Larch Valley, then go up and over Sentinel Pass to Paradise Valley. The view from Sentinel Pass should be stupendous and is one of my favourite hikes :-) From the base of Paradise Valley hike up towards Eiffel Peak for about 1km, then climb over Wasatch Pass back into the Valley of the Ten Peaks, and back to Moraine Lake. This hike is a lot steeper than the hike to Sentinel Pass but can be easily done. This is one of the most scenically splendid trails in Banff National Park. Just past Moraine Lodge, an uphill trail starts its 3 km climb through forest to Larch Valley and the Minnestimma Lakes (an Indian word for "sleeping water"). It helps to stay on the switchbacks on this trail as shortcuts cause erosion and trail damage. Like magic, you suddenly emerge from forest into the meadows of Larch Valley where the glacier-studded Wenkchemna Peaks soar up all around you. From this valley, 520 m above Moraine Lake and only 205 m below Sentinel Pass, you get wide encompassing views. Continue on another 2.8 km to the top of the pass with its powerful views. At an elevation of 2611 m (8566 feet), Sentinel Pass is one of the highest in Banff National Park. You'll have to pick your way down a steep, rocky slope to a trail that shortly connects up with the Paradise Valley Trail. The route over Wasatch Pass will be steeper and rougher. Once over Wasatch Pass we will be at Eiffel Lake and an easy 5.3km hike back to Moraine Lake. This trip is best suited to strong/experienced hikers. There are sections of this trip which are very steep/rocky and/or off-trail. We will maintain a moderate to brisk pace for this outing. The four hiker rule is currently in effect for this area meaning that all hikers must stay in tight groups of at least four to minimize the risk of bear-hiker confrontations. Plan for a long day as we may stop in Canmore for supper. | |||||||
