Distance: 10km Net Elevation Gain: 565m Total Elevation Gain: 640m Trailhead Elevation: 1,755m Summit Elevation: 2,320m This area is popular with ATV users and is less often visited by hikers. The Burnt Timber Creek area is a gap of lower peaks in the front ranges, visible when looking north from Nose Hill in Calgary showing the mountains end so abruptly at Margaret Lake. Our destination is an abandoned fire lookout summit. Although the peaks are lower in the gap, there remains a lot of striking topology. Roads are genrally very good, as there are numerous gas wells in the area requiring good access all year round. As of a couple of weeks ago, this area was looking quite spring-like: little snow at the tops of mountains/hills and a bit more along the road. Don't be surprised if we encounter ATVs; they can drive to the top of Burnt Rimber Lookout. We will follow the route as per the GPS track at the bottom of this page. Inexplicably the trail drops at one point, then heads back up again to the ridge. This may not be a problem for a pack mule or an ATV, but we will take the straight line along the ridge on the way back. The summit is a broad plateau with 180-degree views of the summits surrounding the gap. Mount Oliver is especially striking. There is a brass cap survey marker on the summit.
