Let's go out and enjoy another faraway scramble before the days get too short! Please note that a headlamp will be required, in the unlikely event that the trip goes longer than planned.

Turtle Mountain is one of the most popular scrambles in the Crowsnest Pass area. It is best known as the site of the tragic Frank Slide of 1903. Without warning, 74 million tons of the mountain crashed down, burying the coal mining town of Frank directly below. The ascent will allow us to gaze down the scarred face and see the widespread devastation.

We will take the straightforward trek up to the north summit, then we'll start the fun part of the scramble which is the ridge between the north and south summits. We will navigate around the deep fissures across the ridge and enjoy some light hands-on scrambling before summiting the south summit with all its seismic measuring equipment. If time permits, and the wind isn't knocking us over, we'll head over to the helipad. The return trip is the way we came.

While the coordinator likes to take long breaks at the summit (if conditions permit), we will be moving at a STEADY MODERATE pace. For your own safety and for the enjoyment of the group, if you move at a slower pace or like to take frequent breaks, then this event is not for you. The coordinator will be checking your event history.

Please note that the coordinator has not done this trip before. Please allow time/patience for unforeseen circumstances.
