Dodge Ball ~ Season 6 Week 26
If you're looking for a chance to meet new people, let loose and have some fun, St Stephen's Junior High School is the place to be this spring for COC Dodge Ball! Whether you're a seasoned veteran or upstart rookie, I want to encourage you to come participate in this fantastically fun event. Each week we start fresh with 4 new teams who all compete for their chance to win gold and hoist the coveted Dodge Ball Cup. There’s no league to join and no season long commitment to make, just sign up when you feel like playing and pay as you go, it's that simple! The more you play the more you'll love it!

At the conclusion of each event, a short ceremony is held to present the winning team with the Dodge Ball Cup and award each member a gold medal as a memento of their victory. Winning team photos and individual player statistics are also posted on the Dodge Ball Wall of Fame for you to enjoy all season long! Of course this is all in good fun and we really don’t take the game that seriously however I must admit keeping stats certainly creates some very interesting rivalries amongst the participants!LOL
I'm looking forward to seeing you there!

COC BASIC DODGE BALL RULES

INTRODUCTION:
The information below is meant to give you an understanding of the rules we use for COC dodge ball events. Please be sure to read through them PRIOR to attending so we can spend more time playing and less time explaining. You do not want to let your teammates down by arriving unprepared so please take a few minutes now to familiarize yourself with the following information:

OBJECT:
The object of dodge ball is to eliminate players on the opposing team by hitting them with the ball (below the shoulders). The game ends when all players from one team have been eliminated OR the 3.5 minute time limit expires (whichever comes first). If time expires before all players from one team have been eliminated, the team with the most players remaining will be declared the winner. If both teams have the same number of players remaining it will be considered a tie (except in playoffs, where sudden death will be used to declare a victor).

SETUP:
Upon arrival, the coordinator will randomly divide the participants up into four equal teams of approximately 7-10 members. Males and females will be divided up amongst all four teams as evenly as possible. When a team is on the court, all members of that team are expected to participate. In the event teams are uneven due to an odd number of registrants, a player from the larger team will sit one member out.

Time permitting, a round robin tournament consisting of approximately 20 games will be played followed by two semi-finals and two medal round championship series. Round robin games will be limited to 3.5 minutes each with all four teams facing each other approximately three times. Teams will be awarded two points for a victory and one for a tie. At the end of the round robin teams will be ranked according to their total points accumulated. The semi-finals will then see #1 vs. #4 and #2 vs. #3. The winner of each semi final series will then move on to battle it out for gold and the right to hoist the Dodge Ball Cup while the other two teams compete for bronze.

SPORTSMANSHIP:
All players are expected to demonstrate a “FUN FIRST” attitude and refrain from being overly aggressive.

ELIMINATE YOURSELF if you’ve been hit! Don’t try to get away with thinking no one else saw it. Not calling yourself out is the ultimate in poor sportsmanship.

Always RESPECT your opponents! Foul language aimed at others or threatening/aggressive behavior of any kind will not be tolerated.

Conduct yourself with MATURITY if approached regarding your style of play and make an honest effort to modify your behavior accordingly.

ALL participants are responsible for their own actions. Please remember to play with fairness, call your own fouls and treat one another with respect at all times.

JUDGING:
Each game will be ‘monitored’ by up to 4 Volunteer Judges (ideally two from each team currently not on the court). The responsibility of the VJ’s is to simply observe the play, notify teams when time has run out and SETTLE any minor disputes such as head shots or stepping over centre. The ruling of a VJ is FINAL and failure to comply will result in a players immediate disqualification from the game. VJ’s are NOT trained referees and are certainly not expected to engage in confrontations with fellow participants. The main role of a volunteer judge is to keep the game moving and offer unbiased rulings when required. They are NOT there to ‘police’ the behavior or conduct of fellow participants as that responsibility ultimately lies with the COC event coordinator. ALL PLAYERS are expected to treat one another with respect, call their own fouls and voluntarily remove themselves from the play when hit.

PLEASE LEAVE THE JUDGING TO THE JUDGES! AS A SPECTATOR YOU SHOULD REFRAIN FROM YELLING OUT CALLS AS IT WILL ONLY CAUSE CONFUSION.

PLAYING THE GAME:
To start a game, each team stands at their respective back wall. The VJ's will place 4 or 5 dodge balls 5 feet back from the centre line on each half court and when both teams have indicated they are ready to begin the VJ's will start the game by shouting “READY, SET, DODGE BALL!” Players will then rush to the balls to begin play as the clock starts ticking. Once play has begun, players must remain in their own half of the gym. Players may lean over the half-line to retrieve the ball but may not touch any part of the opponent’s court. If a player accidentally or intentionally touches the court on their opponent’s half, they are out of the game. Players may NOT remain static in areas that conceal or partially conceal their body. i.e. door ways or equipment that may be stored in the gym. Eliminated players must stand/sit along their player’s bench outside the court area so as not to interfere with the play.

Field Of Play:
Players MUST remain within the field of play when throwing balls at the opposing team and/or avoiding balls being thrown at them by the opposing team. The field of play is identified as the large rectangular area within the thick black lines that surround the gym floor (the same area that would be used for basketball). Areas outside the black lines are for spectators and eliminated players only. Active players are only permitted to enter this zone to retrieve balls, and must not remain stationary in this area or risk elimination. Judges are expected to give verbal warnings to players who violate this rule and if necessary disqualify those who repeatedly ignore the warnings.

Throwing A Ball:
To eliminate someone, a ‘live’ ball must hit the player from the SHOULDERS down. In order for a ball to become 'live' it must FIRST be picked up using only your hands. You cannot swat, kick or use the forward motion of your body to knock a ball upwards toward your opponent in an attempt to eliminate them. When throwing a ball, competitors must use only a standard overhand or underhand pivoting and follow-through motion (no 360 degree discus style throwing is allowed). Balls MUST be thrown towards the opposition with enough force so as not to appear like you've just dropped it in order to catch another. Judges are expected to give a verbal warning to any player observed using improper throwing techniques and if the offending player does not rectify his/her behaviour immediately, they may be called on a subsequent offense for "dropping" the ball.

Note: A ball is LIVE as soon as it is thrown and remains live until it comes into contact with another person or object. Any player hit with a LIVE ball is eliminated even if the two players involved are on the same team.

Obtaining a Ball From Over Centre: When reaching for a ball over the centre line, players must pick it up directly off the floor without rolling it back to themselves with either their hands or feet.

Catching a Ball:
If a player CATCHES a ‘live’ ball that is thrown at him/her – the thrower is eliminated. In addition, the team who caught the ball may return a previously eliminated player back onto the court. Players who re-enter the game are admitted back in; in the order they were eliminated. (i.e. the first person eliminated would be the first to return to the game, the second player eliminated would be the second player to return, etc). If nobody has been eliminated and a ball is caught, no one is admitted back into the game and the thrower is still ‘out’. Players cannot dribble balls in their possession, this would be considered the same as losing possession and the player would be eliminated.

Passing A Ball:
You may pass a ball to a teammate by means of a throw only. Players are not permitted to kick or swat a ball in an effort to direct it to a fellow teammate. If the receiving player fumbles or drops the ball, the player who attempted the catch is eliminated. Players will also be called out if they attempt a pass by using a ball already in their possession to 'push' or knock another ball along the floor in the direction of a teammate.

Possession:
Players may only be in possession of ONE ball at any given time. A player already in possession of a ball CANNOT simultaneously catch or retrieve a 2nd ball. Players cannot intentionally maintain possession of balls on their side of the court in an effort to stockpile them. Players must always make an effort to return balls in a timely fashion regardless of how many players are left in the game. Players must ALWAYS release a ball within 10 seconds of taking possession. This can be difficult to monitor with up to 10 balls flying around so each player is expected to demonstrate good sportsmanship by keeping an eye on their time. Judges are also expected to give verbal warnings to players who violate the 10 second rule and if necessary disqualify those who repeatedly ignore their warnings.

Blocking Shots:
Players may use a ball in their possession to block/deflect another ball thrown at them. However; if that player drops the ball or has it knocked out of their possession – they are eliminated from the game.
Example: a player is holding a ball and another ball is being thrown at them, they put down/drop/or fumble the ball they were holding in order to catch the second ball, the player is eliminated. The only action a player can take with a ball in their possession is to throw it at their opponent or pass it to a teammate. A deflected ball is considered to be ‘dead’. Any player from the non-throwing team that is hit with a deflected ball is not eliminated.

Head shots:
Balls thrown (accidentally or intentionally) that strike an opponent directly in the head (above the shoulders) will result in immediate disqualification of the thrower. If on the other hand, a ball hits a player’s arm/hand first and then deflects into their head, it would be considered a legal hit based on the first point of contact. In this case the thrower would not be penalized and the player who was hit would in fact be eliminated.

Intentionally Moving Your Head Into A Ball:
Players may NOT use their head to block a ball. The VJ will have the discretion to disqualify players that are intentionally ‘ducking’ into the ball with their head. Players who attempt to eliminate opponents using this strategy can be eliminated from the game at the VJ's discretion for unsportsmanlike behavior. If this occurs the thrower is NOT penalized and will remain in the game.

Dead Ball:
A player is not eliminated when struck by a dead ball. A ball is considered ‘dead’ after it hits ANY object (including the wall, floor or another person) meaning you cannot eliminate more than one person with a single shot or save a teammate by catching a deflected ball. If however, you are struck with a ball that deflects into the air and you catch it before it comes into contact with anything else, you are SAFE.

Spectators Returning Balls:
When one team is heavily outnumbered and unable to return balls at a reasonable rate, spectators may assist by retrieving and gently rolling back surplus balls found sitting along the perimeter of the playing area.

If assisting in this way please abide by the following:
(a) Make every effort to avoid cutting across the middle of the court to retrieve balls. Stick to the sidelines as much as possible to minimize disruption.
(b) NEVER interfere with a ball that is situated within close proximity to an active player.
(c) NEVER throw or kick balls through the air as this can be quite distracting to the players. Always roll them along the floor as gently and smoothly as possible.
Thanks for your help!

Time Clock Buzzer:
When the time clock buzzer sounds, all live balls are immediately considered DEAD. This means even if a ball is already in the air before time expires a player cannot be eliminated after the buzzer sounds.

Sudden Death:
Ties are not permitted in the playoffs. If there are equal number of players remaining on each side when time expires, the game will be restarted in a sudden death format. All players still on the court will be asked to line up along their back line while the balls are repositioned back near centre. If there are less than 3 players per side, teams will be permitted to send in additional players until they have a total of 3 on the court. REMEMBER PLAYERS MUST BE ADDED IN THE ORDER THEY WERE ORIGINALLY ELIMINATED!
