Ball Hockey #73 **Family Day Classic**
Come enjoy a fun and exciting afternoon of recreational ball hockey at Vision Sports Centre on Flint Road SE here in Calgary. This facility is specifically designed for ball hockey with an arena style playing surface surrounded by regulation boards, glass and netting to the ceiling. If you are used to playing in school gymnasiums or community centres you're going to love this! All levels are welcome however previous experience playing some form of hockey would be considered highly beneficial. Please be aware of the potential for injury while participating in this sport. Although we are playing at a recreational, "just for fun" level, there is always a risk of being struck by a hard wayward shot or inadvertently hit by a stick during the play, so it's never a bad idea to bring along some form of protective gear. That being said, you will find the majority of participants (other than the goalies) elect to play with little or no equipment, so the choice is ultimately yours on what to bring.
ATTENTION GOALIES: I will provide the
required goalie equipment for those who wish to
play net including: helmet, mask, leg guards,
glove, blocker, chest protector, jersey and
goalie
stick. You may also wish to bring your own jock
(can be purchased at most sporting good stores
for
under $15), hockey pants and custom fit jersey
but
those items are not mandatory. If you are
interested in playing goal please indicate that
in
the "notes" section when registering.
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING YOUR OWN HOCKEY STICK! Not sure where to get one?? Check out what Canadian Tire has to offer starting as low as $11.99! COC BASIC BALL HOCKEY RULES INTRODUCTION: This event is intended to be played at a recreational NON-COMPETITIVE LEVEL. This means the event is geared towards those who are capable of competing without taking things too seriously or being overly aggressive. As with most of my sporting events you should come prepared to participate with individuals of varying skill levels from beginner to advanced. Those who are more advanced in ability are EXPECTED to include all of their teammates in the play and keep it FUN for EVERYONE. OBJECT: The object of ball hockey is to direct a ball with a hockey stick into the opposition's hockey net. The team with the highest number of goals when time expires is declared the winner. If the game is tied at the end of regulation, a short overtime period OR shootout will be held to declare a winner. SETUP: Upon arrival, the coordinator will randomly divide the participants up into two equal teams of approximately 10 members each. Males and females will be divided up amongst the teams as evenly as possible. Teams will play with 6 on the court at a time including 3 forwards, 2 defence and a goalie. When playing on the smaller court we will go with one less forward per side. A volunteer from each team will be required to play in net with the majority of the equipment being provided including; helmet, face mask, chest protector, jersey, blocker, glove and stick. You will need to provide your own jock and hockey pants (optional). Time permitting, we will enjoy a 5-10 minute warm up where goaltenders will have an opportunity to face some shots before we begin play. The game will consist of 3 thirty minute periods with approximately 5 minute intermissions between each. Players are expected to limit their shifts to approximately 3 MINUTES. All players should attempt to change as close to 3 minutes as possible to ensure everyone receives equal playing time and nobody is stuck sitting on the bench too long. SPORTSMANSHIP: All players are expected to demonstrate a “FUN FIRST” attitude and refrain from being overly aggressive. Always RESPECT your opponents! Foul language aimed at others or threatening/aggressive behavior of any kind will not be tolerated. Conduct yourself with MATURITY if approached regarding your style of play and make an honest effort to modify your behavior accordingly. ALL participants are responsible for their own actions. Please remember to play with fairness, call your own fouls and treat one another with respect at all times. REFEREE: There will be no official “referee” to monitor the play, call penalties, handle faceoffs or call things like high sticking and body contact. That being said the onus will be on YOU to call your own fouls. For example, if you accidently trip someone, you should stop play immediately and turn possession over to the player who was tripped. The same would apply for things like unnecessary body contact, hand pass or high sticking. GENERAL PLAY: Teams will play with 6 players on the court at all times including 3 forwards, 2 defence and a goalie. When playing on the smaller court we will go with one less forward per side. Each team must have a MINIMUM of 1 female on the court at all times excluding the goaltender. SHIFT LENGTH: Players are expected to keep their shifts to a MAXIMUM OF 3 MINUTES. This is extremely important to ensure a steady rotation and equal playing time for all. Failure to comply with this rule may result in suspension from future events. FACE OFFS: Without a referee, face offs will only be used to start a period or to resume play after a goal is scored. Therefore all face offs will take place at centre court. Any player on the court can volunteer to drop the ball for the opening faceoff but on all subsequent face offs after a goal is scored, the team that scored the goal will be responsible for providing a player to drop the ball. At the beginning of the 2nd and 3rd periods the team in the lead should provide a player to drop the ball. If the game is currently tied, teams may use a quick round of rock, paper scissors to determine who will drop the ball. LINE CHANGES: Players will generally have to change on the fly as there will be very little stoppages in play without a referee present. Goalies are permitted to cover the ball for up to 15 seconds to allow for a player change but must release the ball behind their net to a teammate as soon as the substitution is complete. When this occurs, offensive players must wait for the ball carrier to move the ball forward over the goal line before resuming play. HAND PASS: Players are not permitted to knock a ball out of the air with their hand and direct it to a fellow team mate. If this occurs the play is stopped immediately and possesion is given to the opposing team where the offence took place. Play resumes as soon as the player attempts to run with the ball, initiates a pass or shoots the ball. KICKING THE BALL: A player may use their feet to kick a ball to a fellow team mate but cannot score a goal using any type of kicking motion. If it is deemed a goal was scored through a kick in, the goalie will be awarded possession and the play will continue as if no goal had been scored. SHOOTING THE BALL: Absolutely no FULL slap shots! When shooting the ball, your stick must ALWAYS remain at or below your waist during the entire follow through motion. GOAL CREASE - PAINTED AREA: All offensive players must remain outside the goal crease at ALL TIMES. Your stick may enter the crease but not your body. Once the goalie has gained sole possesion of the ball and freezes it, all offensive players must vacate the immediate area including behind the goal line until the ball has been put back into play. If the goalie chooses to play the ball to a teammate behind his/her net, offensive players must wait for the ball carrier to move the ball forward across the goal line before resuming play. CONTACT: There is absolutely NO BODY CHECKING permitted. Due to the nature of the sport, minor incidental contact will be unavoidable but participants are still EXPECTED and REQUIRED to make every effort to avoid playing the body. PLAY ALONG THE BOARDS: As indicated above, playing the body is NOT PERMITTED. When two players are racing to retrieve a ball along the boards, the lead player must be given room to retrieve the ball safely. Under no circumstances should one player run into another player against the boards. In a battle for possession it is the responsibility of BOTH players to ensure they respect each others space and allow the player closest to the ball the opportunity to retrieve it safely. EJECTION/SUSPENSION: Participants who demonstrate a lack of respect for the safety of others OR display an overly competitive / aggressive nature may face ejection and/or possible suspension from my future COC ball hockey events. IT'S JUST A GAME: Remember the #1 reason we are here is to have FUN! This event is an alternative to competitve league style play and is intended for those who enjoy a more friendly casual atmosphere. If your focus is all about winning, this event is definitely NOT for you! | |||||||
