Itinerary: | |||||||
Distance: 14.7km return
Elevation Gain: 670m Pace: Moderate and steady. Priority: May be given to drivers. Note that the Smith Dorrien Trail is gravel. Group: We will stay together as a group at all times. This is prime bear territory Duration: Event duration may vary. Please do not sign up if you need to be back for another commitment. I hiked this trail on June 24th. It was in great shape but unfortunately we had to turn back before we could go up the headwall to the pass. I'd like to try again. We will not be making the circuit over North Buller Pass on this trip. We'll take in the view from the pass then turn around and go back the way we came. Moderate length, moderate pace. An adventurous, rewarding dayhike. After the first hour, you'll be mostly above the treeline with the surrounding mountains in view. The view from the pass is outstanding. From the parking area, return to the highway and cross it. The trail begins on the east side. Immediately cross a small bridge, enter forest, and curve northeast. This will remain your general direction of travel for the first hour. Within 15 mins, cross a bridge to Buller Creek's north bank. The trail ascends moderately then contours for nearly 1km through pleasant Engelmann spruce forest. At 2.8km, cross a bridge to the creeks south bank. Ascend more steeply, then enjoy a level reprieve. Where the forest opens, you can look up both valleys: right (east-southeast) leads to Buller Pass; left (northeast)leads to North Buller Pass. Mt. Buller is farther left (directly north). About an hour from the trailhead, pass a turquoise pool where the creek cascades into a rock bowl. Then cross a footlog over the creek's south fork. One minute beyond, watch closely for a fork near a tree blazed N-S. Here, at 3.7km, bear right, staying on the main trail. Proceeding on the main trail, within 15mins ascend past a gorge on the right and attain a view of the cliffs. Larches appear in the upper subalpine zone. The trail begins curving northeast. At 2240m Buller Pass is visible ahead. Ascending gently into the upper basin, the trail grazes a creeklet and small cascade. Then it climbs the steep, rocky headwall, gaining 160m to crest Buller Pass at 7km, about 2 hrs from the trailhead. Ribbon lake is visible east, in the basin far below the pass. Behind it is 2959m Mt Kidd. North of the lake is 3144m Mt. Bogart. PACE: We will be hiking at a moderate pace. If you're not sure about a hike, feel free to contact the coordinator and remember to always hike within your ability in order to be able to keep up with the group. If you have not hiked before or recently hiked with 500M+, this hike is not for you.
