Itinerary:

Distance: 17km round trip to Upper Galatea Lake
Elevation Gain: 670m.
Pace: Relaxed

Those willing to drive may be given preference

We will make a brief bathroom stop at the Barrier Lake Visitor Centre on our way to the Galatea Lakes Trailhead.

This is meant to be a relaxing yet steady paced hike with ample opportunities for photos and brief rest stops along the way. We will take a 20 minute break at Lillian Lake before tackling the final 2km and 200m ascent to Upper Galatea Lake (our lunch spot). Plan on spending a good hour here to relax and enjoy!

The trail begins at the Galatea parking and descends quickly to the Kananaskis River, where a suspension bridge provides easy access to the opposite side. A junction near the far side of the bridge links Terrace Trail with Galatea Creek. Turn left at this junction and begin the slow climb up the valley. This trail zigzags back and forth over Galatea Creek as it climbs the valley. As you go further, you begin to get some views to the left towards Fortress Ridge and an outlier of The Fortress.

After crossing the creek for the third time, the trail begins to traverse a high cutbank rising to the right. Soon, the trail makes a number of short switchbacks to climb above the creek, and then it quickly rejoins. After crossing back over to the left of the river at bridge 5, the creek drops over a pretty waterfall. At around the 2km mark, the trail crosses several runoff channels coming off the cliffs of Mount Kidd to the right of the trail. This brings the trail into a darker, moister section of forest. After several more crossings, the trail begins a very steep section just after crossing bridge 9 at km 4.5. This steep section levels out just before joining the junction with Guinn's Pass Trail at the 5km mark. Keep climbing more gradually past that junction and you will meet the shores of Lillian Lake half a kilometre further.

**The most demanding part of the hike is between Lillian Lake and Lower Galatea Lake where you will climb as much as 180m in just over 1km**.

As always the stated event duration is an estimate only, please do not be in a rush to get back to Calgary. If you have concerns about being home by a certain time it's likely best not to register - when in doubt, don't come out.
