Itinerary: | |||||||
Distance: 14km Return Elevation Gain: 380m It's wilderness with the edges sanded off, and a couple coats of varnish slapped on, but go anyway. The raw, ancient beauty overpowers man's pestiferous presence and clumsy attempts at embellishment. Understand that the trail, initially a paved walkway, begins at a world-famous hotel and ends near a teahouse. Crowds are inevitable. So are the sounds of jaws dropping and shutters clicking - yours among them - in this colossal cirque. The trip begins at powder-blue Lake Louise, an unforgettable sight that for many IS the Canadian Rockies. From there, you'll climb steadily until you're boxed in by cliffs. You'll see two obvious tongues of the lower Victoria and Lefreoy glaciers, as well as other glaciers clinging higher on the peaks. The lower glaciers are pockmarked with crevasses. On a sunny day, you can sit at trail's end and watch avalanches hurtle down from above. On Popes Peak, it appears as if a sculptor chiseled a series of monks. Look for them standing in a row, their hands clasped in supplication to the mountain gods. Ref: Don't Waste Your Time in the Canadian Rockies 5th Edition, Shoulder Season Trip 118, p427. Also, GemTrek's Lake Louise and Yoho Map. Please be flexible with your evening plans as we may stop for supper on the way back. If you are in a hurry to get back, please do not sign up for this trip.

How to Get There: | |||||||
Event Directions: | Take the Trans Canada Highway west from Calgary, past Banff. Take the Lake Louise turn-off and head in. Past the stop sign, you'll see a strip mall on the right. It's a good coffee/bathroom stop and as well is a visitor info centre just north of the mall. Continue past the mall and up to the Chateau Lake Louise. Park in the lot there where there are also public bathroom facilities, and then meet at the lakeshore (follow the short trail from the parking lot up to the lake and loiter there - you'll see the boathouse to your left, and the Chateau to your right).
