Itinerary:
In little over three hundred years, one of the world’s most intriguing and diverse cuisines has evolved at the southern tip of Africa.

The pounding of wooden pestles in time-worn mortars; the grinding of aged stone against stone; the sizzle of meat over the coals of an open fire; the crack of shellfish being prised open and the bubbling of a cast-iron potjie – these were the sounds of early African cooking.

Much has changed in three hundred years; much remains the same. While we observe the inevitable demise of some age-old practices and cooking skills, we take pride as South African culinary art enters the spotlight of the world’s food stage, and watch as it make its mark as an internationally-acclaimed cuisine.

As elsewhere in the world, the South African table has been forged by a vital force that spurs man to borrow from his past, take into account the present, yet look to the future.

South African cuisine is many things to many people – intertwined into each other.

The fare that typifies South African best is Cape-Dutch Malay – shortened to Cape Cuisine – whose foundations nod to ancient Greek and Roman civilizations which, through the passage of many centuries, were altered, elaborated on, and improved by European cooks of originality and ingenuity. Subsequently the food heritage of others – French, German, British, Scottish, Italian, Greek, Portuguese, Mauritian, Chinese, Jewish and Indian, among them – have impacted on our menus, and added to our list of recipes.

Some of our dishes are rooted in the mist of time, while others have been influenced by the modern kitchen. A few are new innovations from a country with a strong regional pride.

Jabulani South African Restaurant aims to be a joyous celebration of South Africa, its people and its cuisine.
